Ask any professional cyclist where they would live if they could choose anywhere in the world, and the answer is almost always the same: Girona.
This small, medieval city in northeast Catalonia has quietly become the global capital of road cycling. But what is it about Girona that draws the world's best riders here, year after year?
The Roads
It starts with the roads. Within thirty minutes of Girona, you can be climbing through the volcanic landscape of the Garrotxa, descending sweeping coastal roads above the Costa Brava, or grinding up the quiet passes of the pre-Pyrenees.
The variety is extraordinary. There are roads here for every kind of rider: short, punchy climbs for interval work; long, steady ascents for endurance; rolling farmland for easy recovery days; and rough gravel tracks through forests for those who want something different.
And the surfaces are good. Really good. Catalan roads are well-maintained, relatively quiet outside the main highways, and blessed with the kind of smooth tarmac that makes you want to ride all day.
The Climate
Girona sits in a sweet spot between the Mediterranean coast and the mountains. That means mild winters, warm springs and autumns, and hot summers tempered by the proximity of the sea.
You can ride comfortably here for ten or eleven months of the year. Even in January, sunny days in the mid-teens are common. By March, the training camps are in full swing and the roads come alive.
The Culture
Cycling is woven into the culture here in a way that feels natural, not forced. Drivers are patient and respectful. Village bars are used to lycra-clad customers ordering espressos at 10am. Bike shops and mechanics are everywhere.
The cafe culture is built around the ride. You know the best cafes by the number of bikes leaning against the wall outside.
The Community
What truly sets Girona apart is the community. Professional riders, keen amateurs, retired racers, and complete beginners all share the same roads. It is not unusual to find yourself on the wheel of a Grand Tour rider on a Tuesday morning, or chatting with a former world champion at a coffee stop.
There is an openness here that you do not find in many places. Cycling in Girona is a shared experience, and that generosity of spirit extends to visitors too.
Why Rocacorba
We built Rocacorba Cycling because we wanted to share everything we love about this place. Our hotel sits thirty minutes from the city, in the quiet countryside above the Lake of Banyoles. From our door, you can ride in every direction and find something worth discovering.
Whether you come for a long weekend or a full week, whether you are training for a race or simply riding for the joy of it, Girona will not disappoint.
Come for the riding. Stay for everything else.
